Tom Clancy’s The Division – Prerelease sale 30% off

Tom Clancy's The Division

If you are like me, you have probably seen some folks playing Tom Clancy’s The Division’s BETA version 1.0 release in the last day or so on the Twitch.TV website.  This is the pre-release and there’s still some work to be done before it’s March release date, but you can get a feel for what kind of game it’s going to be when it releases.

Some folks are saying it’s got a Destiny like feel to it, but instead of being set in outer space, you are instead part of a team in a post apocalyptic New York City.  It’s an online game that’s multiplayer.

The pre-release price is $59.99, 59.99 EUR, or 39.99 GBP but if you use the link below and the code I provide, and purchase before 2/8/2016 you will get 30% off.  When I checked that it lowered the price for me to $42.

You will need to enter the offer code of 30PERC-JANUAR-SAVING during checkout, after placing it in your cart.  I’ve purchased from Green Man Gaming before and have never had a problem.  Here’s the link to use.

Amber Alerts on a cellphone

Earlier today my phone made a loud alert sound, and started reading off a message.  This was very similar to what happened a couple days ago when there was a tornado warning issued for my area.

The important difference was that this was not about a weather event, but instead it had to do with a possible child abduction report.  Thankfully the children and the vehicle in the report were located within a few hours by the authorities.

The system that makes these alerts possible has been around since 2013, and is called Wireless Emergency Alerts or WEA.  I found a description of the system online here.

Users can set their phones to not provide alerts involving imminent threats to safety or life, and/or Amber Alerts.  A third type of alert supported by the system, an alert issued by the President of the United States, can not be disabled.

I have some other devices which were in WiFi only mode, and not connected to the cellular network at the time of the alerts, and they did not provide notification of the Amber Alert, or of the Tornado Warning I experienced not that long ago.  I mention this because it’s becoming more common to use WiFi for making telephone calls and some folks may cut off the cellular network option on their device and then wonder why they weren’t alerted.
